Why are You Attractive to Mosquitoes?

Have you ever wondered why some people seem to be permanently swarmed by mosquitoes, while others remain relatively bite-free? It’s true! Some of us really do act as magnets for mosquito bites. In this post, let’s explore the science behind why some people attract mosquitos more than others and uncover the simple ways you can avoid being a mosquito magnet.

Body Chemistry

It turns out that our body chemistry is a major factor when it comes to which people attract mosquitos more than others. Our skin, breath, and sweat all emit chemical signals that are irresistible to mosquitos. The main culprit causing attraction is carbon dioxide – the gas you expel when you breathe – so if your breath is particularly heavy with carbon dioxide, you are more at risk of being targeted by mosquitos. And the lactic acid in our sweat can also make us appear irresistibly attractive to these pesky pests!

Blood Type

Our blood type also affects mosquito attraction levels too; research has found that Type O blood makes us eight times more attractive than those with Type A! So, if you’re an O blood type, be extra careful when outdoors in summer months or visiting areas known for carrying a high risk of dengue fever or malaria (common carriers of mosquito-borne diseases).

What you wear

Finally – and perhaps most importantly – what you wear greatly impacts how much attention you draw from mosquitoes. Dark clothing attracts more bites because dark colors absorb heat and make it easier for mosquitos to find us. Loose clothing also offers plenty of access points for bites, so opt for lighter-colored layers that stick close to the skin such as long-sleeve shirts and trousers tucked into socks to keep your skin covered as much as possible during peak biting times (dusk and dawn).

How can you avoid mosquitos in Austin?

Perhaps a few simple adjustments – from changing what you wear, or how often you shower – can decrease your appeal to mosquitos significantly.  And unfortunately, you can’t change your blood type!

But your most effective weapon against mosquitos is to give Mosquito Hunters a call to control mosquito populations at your home or business.  We visit your home or business regularly to perform barrier treatments, misting services, and more to give you a more comfortable experience outdoors.
