Fleas are highly invasive insects, and they don’t only attack pets. Having them around can lead to irritating bites and potential allergic reactions that can cause headaches, fever, and many other symptoms. By working with our team at Mosquito Hunters™, you can avoid the headaches that come with fighting fleas on your own and get back to enjoying your outdoor spaces without the fear of bringing ticks inside. Our professional flea control protects Palm Harbor, FL residents from these pests.

To best understand how and why to fight fleas, it’s important to know a few key aspects of their lifecycle. Below, we’ll look at the stages in a flea’s lifecycle and some tips for preventing them from invading your home.

The Stages of Flea Development

There are four stages of a flea’s lifecycle. Here’s a quick overview:

1. Flea Eggs

The first stage of the flea lifecycle is spent as an egg. Adult fleas lay eggs shortly after a blood meal, and they lay them in fur in bunches of up to twenty at a time. Fleas are capable of laying around 40 eggs per day. Because of how many eggs they can lay and how quickly these pests can spread, it’s essential to inspect your pets and their bedding for these insects regularly.

2. Flea Larvae

Once flea eggs hatch, they’ll be blind and legless, staying out of the light and spending most of their time feeding on the pre-digested blood left behind by their parents. Once they’ve developed a bit more, after around 5-20 days, flea larvae will begin spinning their cocoons.

3. Flea Pupae

The cocoons that contain developing flea pupae are often hidden deep in your rugs, carpets, and other fabrics, making them extremely difficult to find. Washing your textiles and your pets’ bedding on the hottest setting can help eliminate these pupae to prevent them from emerging as adults and biting you or your pets.

4. Adult Fleas

Once flea pupae sense a meal is nearby, through vibrations, body heat, or an increase in carbon dioxide, they’ll emerge as adult fleas.
