To fight fleas effectively, it’s important to understand their lifecycle and what makes them tick. At Mosquito Hunters, we know fleas. Below, we’ll walk you through the different stages of a flea’s life and a few key prevention strategies to help prevent these pests from invading your home. The best way to keep fleas out of your home, however, is by calling in the pros to keep them out of your outdoor spaces. Our professional flea control protects our neighbors all over the Lowell, MI, area from these pests.

The Stages of Flea Development

A flea’s lifecycle consists of four stages. Here they are:

1. Flea Eggs

Fleas start their lives as eggs, which adult fleas lay shortly after feeding on blood. Flea eggs make up around half of the total population of indoor fleas, and these pests can lay up to around 40 of them daily. To help catch fleas before they start laying eggs, inspect your pets’ fur on a regular basis.

2. Flea Larvae

Fleas are blind and legless in their larval state, and they typically spend their time feeding on blood that’s already been digested by adult fleas. After they’ve developed enough, they’ll spend approximately 5-20 days spinning a cocoon. Fleas in their larval state account for around a third of their total population.

3. Flea Pupae

The cocoons in which flea pupae develop are generally hidden deep inside carpeting if they’re in your home, making them tricky to vacuum away. To effectively eliminate flea pupae in carpeting, use a steam cleaner.

4. Adult Fleas

Adult fleas still in their cocoons will emerge when they detect a meal nearby, whether through body heat signatures, vibrations, or carbon dioxide levels. This process can take days, weeks, months, or even years.
