Fleas can be tricky to fight due to their small size and ability to jump several times the length of their bodies. However, gaining an understanding of fleas and their general lifecycle goes a long way toward helping you understand the “how” and “why” behind effectively fighting these pests. Below, we’ll take a look at the flea lifecycle and the comprehensive flea control used by our team at Mosquito Hunters to protect our neighbors located all over the Grand Haven, MI, area from these pests.

The Stages of Flea Development

So what exactly is the lifecycle of a flea? Let’s take a look:

1. Flea Eggs

The first stage of the flea lifecycle is flea eggs. Adult female fleas lay these eggs shortly after a meal and can lay up to around 40 eggs per day. These eggs are about the size of a grain of sand, and they can develop and hatch even in the winter when many homeowners drop their defenses against invading pests.

2. Flea Larvae

Fleas lay eggs in the fur of animals, and the larvae that hatch from those eggs are legless and blind and feed on pre-digested blood left behind by their parents. Flea larvae will begin spinning their cocoons between 5-20 days after they hatch. Larvae generally account for more than 30 percent of the fleas in any given household.

3. Flea Pupae

Once in their cocoons, developing fleas are hard to track down, as they can be located deep within rugs, carpets, or other fabrics. Fleas only emerge from their cocoons once they sense a meal is nearby through vibrations, elevated carbon dioxide levels, or body heat signatures.

4. Adult Fleas

Once fleas in cocoons sense a nearby meal, they’ll emerge as adult fleas, ready to feed on your pets and increase their numbers. These pests emerge from their cocoons extremely small and flat, and they’ll slightly increase in size once they’ve had a meal.
