WHAT DO YOU MEAN THERE’S MORE STANDING WATER?

clogged gutterAs every Livingston homeowner knows by now, mosquitoes require standing water to breed and can take as few as only four days to emerge.  Since your Mosquito Hunters of Suburban Essex service treatments are three weeks apart, you have recognized how important it is to eliminate any standing water.  So, what do you do?  You constantly dump the water off your trash can lids and out of your kids’ toys.  You have removed the platters below your outdoor plants and replaced them with stones or bamboo to allow drainage to flow through the bottom.  You have even responsibly walked your yard and removed plastic bags that blew over after recycling day so they do not accumulate water.  But have you thought about the standing water you can’t see?

Gutters are often an afterthought for homeowners—one of those “out of sight out of mind” type of things.  When leaves and debris accumulate in your gutters, the downspouts clog and water just invitingly sits there, waiting for Mama Mosquito to come along and lay her 200 eggs.  You may have taken precautions and installed gutter guards and think that protection is enough, but silt off of the roof and decomposing leaves will get through and reduce the drainage to a less than desirable rate.  Gutter guards also provide mosquitoes with two other desirable conditions: shade and protection from the sun.  So, what we are telling you is that whether you have gutter guards or not, it is highly advisable to have your gutters cleaned, at a minimum, once in the spring and again in the fall.  If you live in a more forested area or there are trees that overhang your home, you may consider having them cleaned even more frequently than that.  After all, you are investing a lot to reduce your mosquito population, and the last thing you want to do is undermine the process by creating a breeding area for mosquitoes.

Since not every home owner is comfortable climbing a tall ladder or simply cannot find the time, we highly recommend our Marine veteran friends at Gutter Plumber (www.GutterPlumber.com) to take care of this important chore for you.  With Gutter Plumber, you can expect professional service and photographic evidence of the before and after work performed. Mention Mosquito Hunters of Suburban Essex and they’ll even give you a 10% discount!
