Is Your Yard Ready for Mosquito Season?

As a child, did you dream of being a mosquito farmer?  I doubt it, but unfortunately most of us have probably been one at some time, albeit inadvertently.  Here at Mosquito Hunters of East Henrico-Mechanicsville we think of mosquito control as a team effort.  We treat our customers yards, but we also advise them on things that they can do, or not do, in their yard to make the treatments more efficient.  Following are some tips to help you make sure that your yard is ready for mosquito season.

It all starts with WATER!!  Mosquitoes, of course, need water for their eggs to hatch in and for the larvae to develop into mosquitoes (who then lay more eggs).  This can be in anything from a bottle cap to an unmaintained pool.  Mosquitoes instinctively lay their eggs, not only in water, but in containers and areas that could collect water in them later.  The eggs of some mosquitoes, many that we deal with here in Hanover and Henrico, are drought resistant, meaning that the eggs can survive for over a year without water and then hatch when they are later exposed to water.  There are quite a few culprits in your yard where water can collect creating mosquito breeding grounds, and making you a mosquito farmer.  And, the process from laying eggs to becoming mosquitoes can happen in about a week, even quicker when it’s really hot.

Here are some things to watch out for:

Old Tires – These are like heaven to mosquitoes. They are a perfect breeding ground. Dispose of any that are on your property, or store them inside.  If you must keep them, drill holes in them (this goes for tire swings, too).

Birdbaths – Dump them often and scrub them occasionally in case there are eggs still there waiting for water.

Wheelbarrows – Prop upside down, or better yet store them inside.

Kiddie pools or neglected pools – Dump kiddie pools often; clean and maintain pools.

Buckets, unused flower pots, bottles, cans or any container that can collect water –  Remove or store inside.

Recycle bins – Drill holes in the low spots of the bins for drainage.

Trash cans – Be sure to keep a lid on them.

Tarps – They can collect a lot of water.  Remove the water, especially after a rain.

Toys – Dump often or store inside.

Canoe/Kayak – Store on its side, or inside.

Low spots in your yard that hold standing water – Fill in/repair.

Leaky faucets – Repair so that you don’t have standing water.

Here are a few places you might not think of:

Clogged gutters – They hold water and become a prime breeding ground.  Check/clean out.

Drainage saucers under flower pots – It’s a little bit of water, but that’s all they need.

Tree Holes – Fill them in.

“Lips” – Beware of items such as buckets, wheelbarrows and recycling containers that have a ‘lip’ when flipped over. The lip will collect water and organic matter, enough to welcome a new generation of mosquitoes in just 5-7 days.

Really anywhere that can collect and hold water, even just a tiny bit, can become a mosquito breeding ground making you a mosquito farmer. Search your yard thoroughly for and remove or cover anything that can hold water. Do this regularly and especially after it rains.  Doing this can greatly increase the effectiveness of your Mosquito Hunters treatment.  When we work together as a team, we make your yard much more comfortable and enjoyable.  For more information or a personalized quote, contact us at 804-244-0702 or visit our website at https://mosquitohunters.com/mechanicsville-va/.
