Rain and How it Affects Your Treatment

Our customers are often concerned about their treatment when it rains, or when there is rain in the forecast. Our treatments are able to withstand quite a bit of rain. There are three reasons why:

  • Our products are formulated with a process called Microencapsulation, which acts like a time-release pill on a microscopic level. The active ingredient slowly releases out over time and works with the weather. Microencapsulation is specifically designed for extended performance outdoors.
  • We also use an additive called a Sticker/Spreader that helps the product spread evenly and adhere to the vegetation. Once dry, the application will “stick like glue”.
  • Our treatments are applied to the undersides of leaves, where mosquitoes rest for food and shade, so rain often doesn’t hit the key areas we treat.

The rainfall isn’t an issue so much as the standing water that the rain leaves behind.

When we do treatments, one thing we are always looking for is standing water in your yard. Eliminating standing water in your yard is the best thing that you can do to help our treatments be most effective.  We encourage each of you to do a survey of your yard to look for and dump any standing water.  Don’t just look in the obvious places–buckets, toys, uncovered trash cans, but check everywhere even in places you might not have thought of before.  We often find containers, toys, buckets, flower pots, etc. under decks and porches with water in them.  Look under your decks and porches. There may be things there that you didn’t realize were there.  Also, behind sheds, garages, and fences, places where things are “out of sight, out of mind”.  Some other popular mosquito breeding grounds are old tires and tarps. The longer the water sits and the yuckier it gets, the more attractive it is to mosquitoes looking for somewhere to lay their eggs. It doesn’t take much water either, so dump anything that has standing water and make it a routine to dump it often, especially after it rains.

One other issue we deal with is flooding and floodplain mosquitoes.  On occasion, when it rains, the rain is so heavy that it causes flooding. There is a certain type of mosquito called a floodplain mosquito that lay their eggs above the natural water line in ponds, lakes, ditches, etc.  Because the floodplain mosquitoes hatch all at once when the water levels reach a certain point, they can inundate your property for a time regardless of how well your treatment is working. When it gets to this point, it becomes a sheer numbers game. And, if there are some attractive smelling humans around, they will land on them first for a blood meal before landing on the treated foliage in your yard.  Rest assured that once the mosquitoes do land on the foliage that your treatment will do its job.

Here at Mosquito Hunters of Northwest Richmond-Mechanicsville we believe that mosquito control is a team effort and as we work together, we can improve the comfort factor of your yard.
