Several kinds of insects can invade your home’s outdoor areas, and fleas are among the most invasive. They can also be tough to fight on your own due to their small size and ability to hide in the fur of small animals (including your pets). At Mosquito Hunters, we offer comprehensive flea control that protects Boiling Springs, SC residents from season to season.

To effectively fight fleas, however, it’s essential to understand their lifecycle and what goes into keeping them at bay. Below, we’ll look at the flea lifecycle and some preventative tips for fighting these pests.

The Stages of Flea Development

The flea lifecycle consists of four separate stages. Let’s take a look at these stages and how they can manifest in your home:

1. Flea Eggs

Adult fleas can lay up to around 40 eggs per day, which is why they can breed and increase their numbers so rapidly. Female fleas lay their eggs shortly after a meal from your pets or other animals, and they’ll lay them right in their fur. Because of this, it’s crucial to check your pets regularly for fleas and utilize flea prevention treatments to keep them protected.

2. Flea Larvae

Flea larvae emerge from the eggs blind and legless, spending most of their time feeding on pre-digested blood left for them by the mother. After somewhere between 5 and 20 days after hatching, flea larvae will begin creating the cocoons they’ll use to develop into adult fleas.

3. Flea Pupae

The sticky cocoons which house flea pupae are often located deep in carpeting or other textiles, making them tricky to track down. Flea pupae will stay in their cocoons for up to several weeks before they emerge as adult fleas.

4. Adult Fleas

Once flea pupae are fully developed, they won’t leave their cocoon until they sense a meal through elevated carbon dioxide levels, the presence of body heat or vibrations indicating something is walking nearby.
