Fleas are harmful, invasive pests that can quickly creep into your yard, attack your pets, and eventually end up in your home if left unaddressed. However, because these pests are tiny and breed rapidly, it can be tough to fight them without help from the professionals. At Mosquito Hunters™, we utilize comprehensive flea control treatments to protect our neighbors in the JAX, FL area.

To fight fleas effectively, it’s essential to understand what makes them tick. Below, we’ll take a look at the lifecycle of fleas and a few helpful tips for fighting them at these various stages.

The Stages of Flea Development

There are four main stages of a flea’s lifecycle. Let’s take a closer look at them:

1. Flea Eggs

The first stage in a flea’s lifecycle is the egg stage. Did you know that fleas are so resilient that their eggs can hatch in the winter? Indoors or outdoors, adult fleas lay their eggs in the fur or hair of their victims shortly after a meal and can lay up to 40 eggs per day, usually in bunches of around 20. Because of how quickly fleas increase their numbers, it’s crucial to inspect your pets and home for these insects regularly.

2. Flea Larvae

After fleas hatch, they’re legless and blind, which is why they spend most of their time feeding on pre-digested blood until they’re ready to start creating their cocoons. Flea larvae make up the second-largest population of fleas in any given household (after eggs). Treating your pets with flea products can address these pests before they get into their cocoons and become more difficult to deal with.

3. Flea Pupae

Once in their cocoon, flea pupae can stay in them for days, weeks, months, or even years until the time is right to emerge. Flea cocoons are often located deep within carpeting, making it tough to address them by trying to sweep or vacuum them away.

4. Adult Fleas

Once they sense a meal walking by, fleas will emerge from their cocoons. They measure this by vibration, carbon dioxide levels, and body heat and will quickly head toward their meal upon emerging.
