There’s a lot of misinformation out there surrounding mosquitoes. To effectively avoid and address these invasive pests, it’s important to have accurate information about their behavior. And while our team of mosquito control experts in Eau Claire can protect you from mosquito infestations, it’s helpful to have some know-how surrounding these pests. Below, we’ll debunk a few of the most common mosquito myths to help you separate the facts from fiction.

4 Common Mosquito Myths

Several mosquito myths exist out there, whether they’re coming from your family, your neighbors, or online. Here are a few of these myths:

1. Both male and female mosquitoes bite humans.

Contrary to popular belief, not all mosquitoes bite humans. Not all species of mosquitoes feed on humans. Of the species that do feed on humans, only the females bite. This is simply because mosquitoes feed on the blood of humans to get a source of protein for their eggs. Male mosquitoes rely on flower pollen and other food sources for nutrition.

2. Mosquitoes prefer certain blood types.

You may have heard that mosquitoes prefer certain blood types due to their flavor or their sweetness. The reality is that mosquitoes seek out blood to get protein for their eggs, and they don’t have a preference when it comes to blood type.

3. All mosquitoes carry disease.

Although the mosquitoes that feed on people are certainly capable of carrying and transmitting diseases like Zika and West Nile, only a fraction of them actually do. It’s also believed that certain types of mosquitoes are more predisposed to carrying certain diseases. For example, the tiger mosquito is known to carry West Nile, chikungunya, yellow fever, and dengue fever.

4. Mosquitoes bite people regardless of their size.

Although mosquitoes don’t prefer one blood type over another, they do seem to show preference towards larger humans. This is why men are targeted more often than women by hungry mosquitoes. The reason for this is thought to be that larger humans simply emit more carbon dioxide and body heat, which both attract mosquitoes.
