Fleas are some of the most invasive insects that can take up residence in your home’s outdoor spaces. And once they infest your yard, it’s typically not long until they end up in your home. To effectively fight fleas, it’s important to understand their life cycle and behavior. Below, we’ll go through the different stages of a flea’s life, some preventative steps you can take against these pests at these different stages, and how our proven flea control protects Butte La Rose, LA, residents from them.

The Stages of Flea Development

1. Flea Eggs

Around half of the fleas in the average population are eggs. Adult fleas lay eggs in bunches of up to 20 and can lay up to approximately 40 eggs per day. To prevent these pests from breeding and increasing their numbers, inspect your pets’ fur for them on a routine basis.

2. Flea Larvae

After the flea eggs hatch, they spend their larval state feeding on pre-digested blood and gathering strength to build their cocoons. To eliminate flea larvae from your pets’ fur, it’s best to use anti-flea treatments. Flea larvae generally account for around a third of the average household flea population.

3. Flea Pupae

After fleas enter their cocoons, they’re protected from many external threats. Their cocoons are also sticky and often located deep in rugs and carpeting, making them tricky to vacuum away. To effectively remove flea pupae from textiles, steam cleaning is your best bet.

4. Adult Fleas

Fleas only emerge from their cocoons as adults when they sense a meal walking by. They can do this either through vibrations indicating footsteps, body heat signatures, or carbon dioxide levels, and they can stay in eggs for weeks, months, and even years waiting for their prey.
