With professional mosquito control throughout West Austin, Mosquito Hunters™ delivers superior protection for local homes. Our service includes detailed property inspections, barrier treatments, and customized tips from our friendly Technicians. To get started, we’d like to clear up some misinformation and debunk a few common mosquito-related myths.

5 Common Mosquito Myths Debunked

  • Myth #1: Mosquito bites come from males and females. In reality, 100% of mosquito bites come from female mosquitoes. They do not feed on our blood but instead use it to nourish their offspring. This is why their attacks are so desperate and relentless.
  • Myth #2: Mosquitoes prefer specific blood types. False. Mosquitoes do not have any preference about blood type; they need the nutrients your blood can provide their larvae.
  • Myth #3: Fair skin leads to more bites. Those with fairer skin may experience a stronger reaction to bites. Still, there is no evidence that mosquitoes have a preference in this regard. Again, these are desperate pests that need mammal blood of any kind to propagate their species.
  • Myth #4: Mosquitoes are only active during the summer. We wish this one was true, but unfortunately, it is not. Mosquitoes can remain active throughout the fall and even into the beginning of winter, so you must remain vigilant throughout the year.
  • Myth #5: All mosquitoes spread disease. Fortunately, this is not true. While mosquitoes in the United States are known to carry the Zika virus, West Nile, and other infectious diseases, it is estimated that less than 10% of these pests actually carry disease.
