How Mosquitoes Undergo Diapause in Winter
Have you ever wondered how mosquitoes survive the cold winter months? While many insects die off in the winter, mosquitoes are able to enter a state of dormancy known as diapause that allows them to wait out the colder weather and emerge in the spring.
What is Diapause?
Diapause is a state of arrested development that allows insects to survive periods of environmental stress, such as winter cold or drought. Mosquitoes, like many other insects, are able to undergo diapause as a way of surviving the winter.
How Do Mosquitoes Enter Diapause?
In the fall, as the days get shorter and temperatures begin to drop, mosquitoes sense that winter is coming and begin to prepare for diapause. Female mosquitoes, in particular, will begin to seek out hibernation sites where they can spend the winter. These sites might include hollow logs, burrows in the ground, or other protected areas such as piles of organic matter like leaves.
Once a mosquito has found a suitable hibernation site, it will enter diapause. During this time, its metabolic rate slows down, and it becomes less active. This allows the mosquito to conserve energy and survive until the warmer temperatures of spring arrive.
What Happens When Mosquitoes Emerge from Diapause?
When spring arrives and temperatures begin to warm up, mosquitoes will emerge from diapause and begin to seek out new breeding sites. This is the time when mosquito populations begin to grow again, and when it becomes important to take steps to control their numbers.
