5 At Home Remedies for Mosquito Bites

Getting bit by mosquitoes is never fun. However, there are several remedies you can use to soothe itching that you already have in your kitchen.

  1. Oatmeal
Oatmeal is more than just a good breakfast! Oatmeal contains compounds that have anti-irritant qualities. For small amounts of bites, make a paste consisting of equal portions of water and oatmeal. Then, spoon the mixture onto a washcloth and hold it on the bites, paste-side down, on the bites for approximately 10 minutes. If you have bites all over your body, make an oatmeal bath. Fill your bathtub with warm water and put in 1 cup of oatmeal or ground oats. Soak in the bath for 20 minutes while periodically rubbing the oatmeal onto your bites.
  2. Ice
Ice can reduce inflammation and act as a pain-numbing agent. You can put a plastic bag filled with crushed ice on the bites for five minutes.
  3. Honey
Honey has been used as a wound healing remedy for centuries. Put a small amount of honey onto your bites and spread it around the area. This will reduce inflammation, prevent infection, and soothe itching and redness.
  4. Basil
Basil isn’t just for your favorite pasta! It also can reduce itching from mosquito bites due to containing a chemical compound called eugenol. You can rub finely chopped basil leaves onto your mosquito bites. You can also make a basil rub by boiling 2 cups of water and adding half an ounce of dried basil leaves. Steep the mixture until it’s cool, dip a washcloth into the liquid, and rub gently on the bites.
  5. Apple Cider Vinegar
Apple cider vinegar has been used as a natural remedy for various medical conditions for centuries. To treat mosquito bites, dab a drop of vinegar onto the infected areas. This helps reduce burning and stinging sensations as well as acting as a disinfectant if you’ve been scratching your bites.
