Spring is Sprung!

It’s almost that time of year again. Birds are chirping, bees are buzzing, and flowers are in bloom. While we all look forward retiring our coats once again and enjoying the warmer weather, we’re not alone. The most resilient, deadliest creatures are emerging from a long slumber as well. Nothing detracts from the enjoyment of the outdoors like the nuisance of mosquito bites. Best case scenario you are annoyed and itching slightly and worst case scenario you are one of the 725,000+ killed by mosquito borne illnesses ever year.

There’s no sure fire way to eliminate all mosquitoes from your property, but there are ways you can greatly reduce their ability to overpopulate your yard. Mosquitoes lay their eggs in standing water, the nastier the better! They can lay over 200 eggs in the small amount of water that can fill a bottle cap, so it doesn’t take much. By removing as much standing water as possible, you reduce their ability to lay eggs around your home. Some things you can do to reduce breeding areas:

  • Don’t overwater your grass and keep an eye on your planters – don’t let water sit.
  • Change out the water in your birdbaths daily.
  • Make sure your fountains are continuously running.
  • Remove items that can collect water such as wheelbarrows, ladders, and children’s toys, wagons, and water tables. Keep an eye on your sand boxes as well!
  • Do not overwater your plants.
  • Maintain your plants to avoid overgrowth.
  • Regularly clean your gutters.
  • Fill in tree holes, hollow stumps, and shallow areas in the yard.
  • If you have drains that hold water, you can buy larvicide “donut” dunks online or at home improvement stores. Regularly dump larvicide in standing water that you cannot eliminate so eggs do not grow into adults.
  • Call Mosquito Hunters!
