What You Need To Know About West Nile Virus
Recently, three mosquito trap samples in Southlake have tested positive for West Nile Virus. West Nile Virus is the most common mosquito-borne disease in the United States and is transmitted through infected mosquitoes of the flavivirus genus. These mosquitoes acquire West Nile Virus when they feed on infected birds, which is then passed on to humans. Some rare cases of human infections have occurred through organ transplants, blood transfusions, and breastfeeding.
According to the CDC, 8 out of 10 people that get infected with West Nile Virus do not experience any symptoms. The most common symptoms that are experienced are a fever, headaches, body aches, joint pains, vomiting, diarrhea, or a rash. One in one hundred fifty people that contract West Nile Virus can also develop more severe symptoms such as a high fever, neck stiffness, disorientation, convulsions, vision loss, or paralysis. The most extreme cases can cause fatal neurological diseases. People over 60 are at a higher risk for more severe illness.
Currently, there is no vaccine for West Nile Virus but mild symptoms can be relieved with over-the-counter pain medicine. West Nile Virus can be prevented by taking precautions such as wearing bug spray and long clothing.
