The Sun is Out and So Are the Mosquitoes: How to Protect Yourself
Summer has arrived, which means the sun is out and unfortunately, so are the mosquitoes! Nothing can ruin a fun barbeque more than trying to keep pesky mosquitoes from viciously attacking you. Read on for tips on how to protect yourself and your family from mosquitoes this summer.
Be Aware of Mosquito Peak Hours
If possible, try to limit your outdoor activity during peak mosquito hours. Mosquitoes are most active from dusk to dawn, especially during the early morning and evening hours. During these times, take extra precautions with clothing or repellent.
Blow Them Away
Luckily for us, mosquitoes aren’t great flyers and any light breeze can blow them away. If you’re hosting a summer barbeque, try to plan it for a breezy area. If that’s not possible, fans are also a great deterrent. Mosquitoes fly close to the ground to avoid wind, so direct the flow of air at the lower half of your body to block them.
Choose Your Apparel Carefully
Mosquitoes are unable to penetrate clothing that is tightly woven. Linen and cotton don’t typically provide great protection against mosquitoes, but synthetic fibers often found in athletic gear are usually tightly woven enough to protect against mosquito bites. Mosquitoes use a few of their senses to find their prey, one of them is their vision. While dark colors stand out to mosquitoes, they are less attracted to light colors. It may sound crazy to pick your wardrobe based on an insect’s preference, but you’ll thank us later!
Protect Yourself When Exercising
Mosquitoes are attracted to both movement and heat, so it’s important to take precautions if you exercise in the summer during peak mosquito hours. As mentioned above, athletic gear tends to be tightly woven, which can prevent mosquito bites. Try to cover up as much as possible.
